Gregory Haywood Obituary

Gregory (Greg) Eugene Haywood, after a long battle of health issues, departed this life peacefully at his home surrounded by family and close friends on Tuesday, October 1, 2019.

Greg was born on September 10, 1960, in Jackson, Mississippi to Elmore and Shirley Haywood.  He was the fifth child of six siblings.  Greg graduated from Booker T. Washington Arts Magnet High School, Class of 1978.  Following high school, he completed a degree program in Legal Assistant Technology.  He earned an Associate of Applied Sciences and an Associate in Arts and Sciences from El Centro College; Bachelor of Applied Science from Paul Quinn College as well as a Bachelor Degree of Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate from Southern Methodist University.

Greg met Miranda Gant during a work conference and within 5 months proposed to her and they were joined in marriage in Oxon Hill Maryland in June 2009, and recently celebrated 10 years of marriage.  Greg gave his life to the Lord and attended Victory Christian Ministry International Church in Suitland Maryland.

Greg loved having family and friend gatherings at the house.  Greg was a “master” of many trades.  He loved building things such as reconstructing and remodeling cars (like the time he made his own convertible by shaving the top off his car) as well as sports cars; he loved doing home improvement projects and interior decorating; motorcycle riding; he loved to travel and was an avid listener of Gospel and Smooth Jazz music. Greg loved to travel to sunny beaches and islands.

Greg worked for the Exxon Corporation as a District Manager in 1985.  After Exxon, Greg joined the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and recently retired with 30 years of service as an Air Traffic Controller Facility Manager.  Greg mentored new Air Traffic Controllers.  Greg was an Air Traffic Controller Instructor at the FAA Aeronautical Center in Oklahoma in addition to holding several other positions at the FAA, which allowed him to travel throughout the country.  Greg received numerous accolades during his career as well as other achievements throughout his lifetime.

Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Elmore and Shirley Haywood; his sister LaQueena Haywood; and son DeMorae’ Dione Odom Haywood.

Greg leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife Miranda; sons, Blake and Justin Haywood and JaTerrian (Robin) Odom; one granddaughter, Sabrina Odom; his beloved dog, Diamond; brothers, Elmore (Linda) Haywood, Jr. and Ronald Haywood; sisters, Inita Haywood and Jacqueline Haywood-Henderson; aunt, Erma Odessa Brown all of Texas; father-in-law, Charles Gant; mother-in-law, Margaret Gant; one Godson, Caleb Peterson all of Maryland; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
