Billie Jean Brewer passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, on her 91st birthday, at home surrounded by her loving family. Billie was a cherished daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother and dear friend, whose presence brought joy to all who knew her. Born in Mexia Texas on July 14, 1933, to Maurice Bluitt & Larcenia Franklin Bluitt, she was raised in a close-knit Christian family that instilled in her the values of compassion, integrity, and perseverance. Billie's warmth and generosity knew no boundaries, and her stern but sweet spirit touched the lives of everyone she encountered. She was willing to help others around her whether they were friends, family, neighbors, or church members.
Billie committed her life to Christ at a young age at Smith Chapel AME Church in Mexia Texas, where her mother was one of the matriarchs of the church and a pillar in the community. Billie had a strong work ethic and was employed by DISD for 30+ years and retired as a dietary manager. She and her husband owned a neighborhood grocery store in Oak Cliff at one point. She loved to work with kids and enjoyed ensuring that they had delicious and nutritious meals in the summertime. She was instrumental in providing food for children as they attended various camps and frequented local parks and recreation centers. Ms. Billie was affectionately known all over Oak Cliff by the children she served throughout the school year and summer.
Billie was currently the oldest active member of Greater Community First Baptist Church under the pastorage of LaCedric Williams. Bille was a faithful member and supporter of the church. She was one of the early members of Community First Baptist under the leadership of Pastor C.H. Gerald. In her early days Billie was a very integral part of the Mission Board, the Choir and the Hospitality/Kitchen committee. She spent countless hours in the kitchen at the church as well as her own home. Billie loved to cook and prepared Sunday dinners for her family to come and eat and enjoy each other. Her home was always the gathering spot for family and holiday celebrations and her door was always open for anyone who needed or desired a hot meal.
Billie loved to enjoy life and spent a great deal of time in her latter years with her sister, Celester and her Brother-in-law Wayman. They went on multiple road trips over the years, which she thoroughly enjoyed and the back seat belonged to Billie! She also attended most of the functions and family reunions that were held by the Hemphill Crew and all who encountered her loved her DEARLY!
Billie leaves behind a loving and devoted family: A daughter, Sheila Diane Smith; seven grandchildren, Lorenzo "Snoopy" Brewer, Carocia "Coco" Bluitt, Torie Anderson, Cory Anderson, Talissa"Lisa" Morris, Elfonzo"Wayne" Smith, Michael "Ray-Ray" Anderson; five great grandchildren; Brianna Sisk, Ceptember Morris, Ricky "RJ" Morris, Payton Anderson, Zoren "Zoe" Johnson; two great great grandchildren; Naio'J "Na-Na" Sisk, Cemir Kirvin; sister Celester Hemphill (Wayman), brother Maurice Bluitt (Corene); special nieces Monica "Monk" Bluitt, Pamela Hemphill Ford and numerous nieces and nephews, family and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
