Ida Christman Obituary

Ida Mae Christman, a woman whose life was a testament to her unconditional love, tireless service and unshakeable faith, transitioned peacefully from this side of life in her home on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on March 5, 1935, in Longview, Texas, to Elvie and Wilbur Clark.  She was raised with four sisters and one brother.

Ida was baptized into Christ at an early age at the Ferris Church of Christ in Ferris, Texas.  Upon completing high school, she was recruited by Bro. Grover C. Washington to attend Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas.  Ida also worked for the Dallas Independent School District for 16 years.

While at Southwestern, she was very active in student activities. It was there she met and married the late Amziah C. Christman, Sr. in May 1955. She became a Minister’s wife, working at his side as he served many congregations. To this union three daughters and three sons were added. Ida was a good wife, a good mother, and she loved her family with all her heart. She was later blessed with grandchildren and great-grandchildren who dearly loved her, and she was there for them always.

Ida and A. C. moved to Dallas in 1981 from Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they had labored at Peoria & Young Street Church of Christ for many years. They came to Dallas to continue the work at the former Hatcher Street Church of Christ, after the retirement of the late Alvertise Bowdre, Sr. Going into a building program, she continued to work alongside A. C. at the now Southern Hills Church of Christ, until his passing in 1989. She remained at Southern Hills, faithful and true, serving until her health began to fail and she could no longer attend in-person. Ida lived a life of service.

Over the years, Ida was involved in many ministries, locally and around the country. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, traveling with her friends, visiting family and friends, shopping, and fellowshipping with her brothers and sisters in Christ.

Ida was always concerned about the needs of others, and she worked to fulfill those needs with love, compassion, strength and dignity. Throughout the brotherhood she was known for her hospitality, opening up her home on a regular basis, preparing meals for ministers, leaders, families, students, children, any and everyone. Ida was also an excellent seamstress, and she made beautiful blankets and quilts for everyone. Over the years, she made over 80 quilts for the PUSH Ministry at Southern Hills Church of Christ to give to bereaved families. Whatever God put in her heart, she did. She walked the walk, and talked the talk, always giving God all the glory, honor and praise. She was courageous, an encourager, friend to the friendless, a shoulder to lean on, a trusted confidant, and she had the ability to correct in love. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Amziah C. Christman, Sr., great-granddaughter Stormie Tatum, granddaughter Summer Seals, and her sisters.

She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Carolyn Daily (Tom), Jeanette Christman, and Delicia (Missy) Christman; sons, Larry Christman (Evelyn), A. C. Christman, Jr. (Victoria), and Anthony Creig Christman, Sr. (Tamika); grandchildren, Mikkia DeBose, April Davis (Jarvis), Walter Brown II (Shalonda), D’Quavia Tatum, Jarius Cook, Kirsten Coleman, Anthony Creig II, Nadia Martin, Anitra Christman, Darion Martin, Vetevan Christman, Alexis Christman, Nyhla Gooley, Nyhles Gooley; 16 great-grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur Clark, Jr.; three sisters-in-law, Helen Fears, Otilia Cannon, and Dorothy Christman, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
