Ivey Moore Obituary

On a warm Sunday, in the East Texas town of Marshall, the eleventh day of September 1949, God blessed Samuel Thomas and Velma Campbell Thomas with a bundle of love in the person of a baby girl, Ivey Elise Thomas. Prior to Ivey’s birth, a son was born, but did not survive. One other child was born; a sister, Donetta Marie Thomas.

Ivey grew up in North Dallas near B. T. Washington High School, not far from her future husband, Johnny Moore. Although they did not know each other at the time, they attended the same schools. The family moved to Oak Cliff in 1959. She attended Albert S. Johnston Elementary, leaving to attend F. D. Roosevelt High School. Johnny moved to Oak Cliff in 1964, attending Roosevelt H. S. Fortunately, Johnny met Ivey in 1964, while they were both eighth graders. Their lives would remain intertwined. They separated in the ninth grade as school integration progressed. Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. High integrated, so Johnny had to attend O. W. Holmes for one year before returning to F. D. Roosevelt. The “thing” that started at FDR resumed. They both graduated from FDR in 1968.

Johnny and Ivey married on August 17, 1968. After a few years of marriage, they were blessed with the first of four baby girls, Quinsetta, followed every third year by Melissa, Rachel, and Jessica.

Early in the marriage, Ivey perfected her cooking talents. She was the family chef for holiday meals, having sharpened her culinary skills over the years. Her “legendary” German Chocolate Cake, cornbread dressing and “sweet” tea were staples.

Ivey worked several jobs in her lifetime, retiring in 2007, after working for Dallas Independent School District for 23 years.

Preceding Ivey in death were her parents and infant brother.

Ivey leaves behind her husband, Johnny, four daughters, Quinsetta (Jeneno), Melissa (Anthony), Rachel, Jessica (Karlon), and her sister Donetta (Elvin). She also leaves nine grandchildren, one great-grandson, one aunt and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
