Mrs. Joan Faye Crawford Lakes was born August 7, 1932 in Texarkana, Texas to the parentage for Necie Walter Crawford & Patrick Crawford. She graduated from Dunbar High School moved to Dallas with her sister Mildred Crawford Hill in 1952. She then matriculated to Prairie View College where she received her master’s degree in Education. She later met and married Mr. Finis Arbuckle in 1953 in the old Zion Hill Church in Oak Cliff.
Mrs. Lakes began working for the Dallas Independent School District and served an ombudsman for 7 years under Mr. Nolan Estes, who later became the DISD Superintendent. She then went on to teach in the district for 45 years until her retirement from Skyline High School in 2013. She was a physical education instructor and she also taught social studies and science. Mrs. Lakes was also a bus driver in the district for 36 years and was dearly loved by her students.
Finis and Joan were blessed with a daughter, Fila Arkbuckle.
She leaves to cherish her legacy and love, her devoted daughter, Fila. She also leaves her special nieces and nephews: Millie, Tierney & Larry Hill, Kelli Hill-Shavers, Ryan Shavers, Kelsey Shavers, Howard Crawford, Dwain Sherman, Vanessa Sheffield, Peggy McClennan. She also leaves an extended family with a host of neighbors, coworkers and friends.
