We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Sacred Funeral Home
Joe was born November 26, 1973, to Joe Wilbert Banks, Sr. and Sylvia Hamilton Banks in Garland, Texas. Joe (Joey, as he was affectionately known by his family and many of his friends) attended schools in the Garland Independent School District, graduating from North Garland High School in the class of 1991. He later attended Brookhaven Junior College and the University of North Texas.
He worked as a Pharmacy Technician for more than 10 years with the Tom Thumb/Safeway stores. Later, following his love for comedy, he was employed as a Sound Controller for the past 15 years at the Improv Comedy Clubs in Addison, Texas and at the time of his death, at the Arlington Improv Club.
Joe received his Christian upbringing at Sims Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Garland, Texas under the pastorage of Rev. Anthony Sharp where he was baptized. It was there that he played drums for many years and along with his cousin, Brian Lacy, became the first Christian rappers at the Church! Joe accepted Christ when he was 8 years old boldly declaring to his family Romans 10:9-10 – “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Joe had an insatiable love for life! He loved music, he was a voracious reader, he loved traveling, he loved comedy, he loved his friends, he loved his family, he loved his pets, he loved God – and the things that Joey loved, he loved passionately!
Following in the footsteps of his fraternal grandfather, uncle and father, he became a Mason, working his way very quickly to becoming a 33rd Degree Mason and was a proud, dedicated member of Cherubim Lodge #237. He worked in various leadership capacities and served in many community service initiatives. He was always eager to learn all that he could about free masonry; but was also willing to ask questions to have a better understanding.
