Lois Payne Johnson was born on July 30, 1934, to the parentage of Mr. Clarence Payne Sr. and Zephyer Haltom Payne. She was the third child of four children. She was baptized at the early age of 13 at the Patterson Street Church of Christ, where she attended with her family. Lois received her formal education at Douglas Elementary and High School, in Quanah, Texas. She enjoyed playing basketball, softball and football with her siblings. She graduated from High School at the age of 16.
After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she was employed by Lockheed and later the County of Los Angeles. Lois placed her membership with the Figueroa Church of Christ under the leadership of Bro. R.N. Hogan. She was an active member, participated in different ministries and sung in the Adult Choir. Lois raised two daughters, Yolanda and Jeaneen, with a bond of love, resilience, and guidance.
Later, Lois and her daughters relocated to Bakersfield, California in the early 60s. Lois obtained her Associates Degree from Lufkin Business College, in Bakersfield, California. She was employed by Kern County Welfare Department for over 20 years. Lois placed her membership with the Baker Street Church of Christ under the leadership of Bro. Berry Minor, Sr. and later on Bro. Isaac Sandifer. She taught Sunday School, Wednesday Night Bible class, Ladies Bible class, and Vacation Bible School. She worked as the Coordinator for Women at Work and as Southwestern Christian College Coordinator in Bakersfield, CA. under the guidance of the late Sis. Bethel Smith. As Coordinator, she raised money to support SwCC, in Terrell, Texas. She was very active in her community where she taught quilting and crocheting to the women who attended.
In 2000, she moved to Cedar Hill, Texas, to live with her daughter, Jeaneen, who later relocated to Mesquite, Texas. She placed her membership with the Greenville Ave Church of Christ, where she was a devoted member.
Lois was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She enjoyed being around her family during family reunions and holidays.
Lois is preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Payne, Sr. and Zephyer Haltom Payne, her brothers, Clarence Payne, Jr. and Emmitt Lloyd Payne, Sr. and her sister, Carrie Payne Warren (Loyd).
Those left to cherish lasting memories are her daughters, Yolanda Cotton, who resides in Indianapolis, IN., and Jeaneen Kizzee-Mims, Mesquite, Texas, three grandchildren, Brohney Wilkes, Sr. (Monique), Brittany Wilkes and Shbrone Dee Mims, five great grand children, Atlantiss, Brohney, Jr., Caylyn, Kenyan, and Aria. She also leaves a special niece, Connie Burns (Gene), a host of nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, cousins and friends.
