Lometa Gaskin was born July 14, 1918, in Navarro County, Texas to Jalie Carroll and Sherman Cooper. She received her formal education in the public school system and attended Milford Public School.
She later met and married Mr. Lum Sweeney. To this union, one daughter was born, Edna Earle Sweeney.
Lometa lived in Denver, Colorado for the later part of her years and attended Chapel African Methodist Church and was known a beloved “Church Mom” until her health failed her.
Lometa, “Mama Meta”, as she was so affectionately referred to by her grandkids departed this life on August 29, 2023, at 105 years old. She was preceded in death by her father, Sherman Cooper; mother, Jalie Carroll-Cooper; only granddaughter, Sheree “Terry” McClanahan; great granddaughter, Jordyn L. Rudd, and all her siblings.
She leaves to cherish her legacy and honor: her daughter and son in law Robert and Edna Johnson of Oakland, California; great granddaughters, Rawlei and Rainie McClanahan; great-great granddaughters, Sajanay Gilmore, Taruenna Standard, and Spring Gilmore; great-great grandsons, Samuel Gilmore (Tre), and Patrick Kilgore, Jr., along with a host of other relatives and friends.
