Marie Young Obituary

With hearts full of gratitude and sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Marie Young, who took her final bow—unafraid and with an open heart on Friday, March 20th, 2026 at the age of 90. Marie (Shade) Young was born February 29th, 1936 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Elmer Shade, Sr. and Sallie (Scott) Shade. She was one of 13 children. Marie spent her childhood in Coffeyville, KS, where she attended local public schools and graduated from Coffeyville High School.

Marie departed from Coffeyville and ventured out to the big city of Omaha, Nebraska, where she spent time with sister Myrtle, and enjoying life.  Marie later moved back to Kansas and married Ben E. Young in 1961. Ben and Marie built a life together and resided in Independence, KS, where they had 3 children, Dwight (Shade) Young, Ben Jr., and Joy.

Marie worked at Automotive Control Corporation in Independence for 17 years, and later moved to Inglewood, California, where she spent most of her life working for Pinkerton Security corporation. In 2016, Marie decided to move to Dallas, Texas (Cedar Hill) to be near family. Marie dedicated her time to taking care of her sons, family, and grandchildren, who were the "apple" of her eye.  She often spoke about the "good ole days" growing up in Coffeyville and helping take care of her younger siblings.  Marie enjoyed cooking and sewing and was an avid lover of watching the Lakers' basketball games. In retirement, she found joy completing word search puzzles and chatting on the phone with her sisters and old classmates.

Marie leaves to cherish her memory: preceded in death by brother, Oscar D. Shade;  4 sisters, Ivey Pruitt, Alma "Myrtle" Pruitt, Leona Arnwine, and Ethel Griggs; her sons, Dwight Shade, and Ben E. Young Jr. She left behind 5 brothers, Noble W. Shade, Elmer Shade Jr., William Edward Shade, Ronnie D. Shade, and Ernest C. Shade; daughter, Joy L. Moody; 3 grandchildren, Jeffrey Moody Jr., Jasmine Moody, and Justin Moody.  Marie was blessed to meet her 4 great grandchildren, Natalie Moody, Sydney Lee, Zariyah Moody, and Ny'Heir Morgan.  Marie had a host of nephews, nieces and cousins, and other relatives and friends.
