Her name is Mary Marie Ross Smith, fondly known to many as Maayrie, was born on March 12, 1941, to Clara Baker, John Lee Ross and Girtha B. Hunter.
Maayrie met her “lifetime buddy” and Road Dog, Joe L. Smith (87), at the decrepit age of 14. Maayrie graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
They married in 1958, and from this union they had “five of them crumb-snatchers”. Dewayne (preceded her in death), Gary (Sonia), Juanette (Kenneth), Nigayl (James), and Sherry (Alton).
The grand “crumb-snatchers” include Dimetric, Kristenn, Teneale, La’Tasha, Tamara, Kieale, Niyaila, Nikieyan, Louis, Adrian, Kourtne and too many great and great-great grand “crumb-snatchers” to list.
A host of siblings have preceded her in death. Those left to cherish her memory are her sister Lavon Mims and brothers J. Harold Ross, Jimmy Ross and her beloved friends Velva Ann Slider, Irma Jean Andrews, Shirley Denton, Stephanie Taylor, Dorothy Coleman and Dorothy Warren.
Anyone that had the pleasure to know Maayrie, knew that she was the life of any gathering. When Maayrie walked into a room, she brought an energizing force with her. People were genuinely happy to see her coming. Maayrie always said that she was six-foot-nine and finer than a broke d*ck dog.
Maayrie’s greatest joy was her family, stating “I love you like a hog loves slop, make my heart go bip-bop”. Maayrie had a special love for each of her loved ones.
When Maayrie retired, she continued to live her best life with the love of her life, Joe. She fought three hard battles with cancer, but gave in to the ongoing war on her body. Maayrie always kept her faith no matter what she had to go through during this course in her life. And on her last day, she was still talking big ****.
We love you Mama and you will be so truly and painfully missed in our lives until we meet again.
