Pastor David “Pops” Toney was born to the parentage of Lonnie V. Toney Sr. (deceased) and Elizabeth Goins Toney (deceased) on April 13, 1942 in Giddings, TX. He was the youngest of ten children, Clamous “Son” Toney (deceased), Alene Toney Boyd (deceased), Etta Mae Toney-Brown (deceased), Pastor Lonnie V. Toney Jr. (deceased), Victoria Toney-Barbour (deceased), Doris Toney-Polk (deceased), Pastor Lawrence C. Toney Sr. (deceased), Lizetta Toney Armstrong (deceased), and Pastor Dr. Arthur C. Toney.
David accepted Christ at an early age under the pastorate of the late Pastor William McNeal of Corinth Baptist Church in Giddings, TX, and grew spiritually under the pastorate of his late elder brother, L. V. Toney Jr. He was a charter member of the Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church of Dallas, TX where he served in various auxiliaries including, dean of Sunday school and member of the Ellen Toney (ET) Male Chorus. He also served as the evangelistic chairman of the United Church Fellowship District Association, and he was a member of the City-Wide Brotherhood. Pastor David also served as the interim pastor of Rose of Sharon and Community Fellowship Bible Church both of Dallas, TX.
He moved to Dallas at the age of 14 and lived with his late sister, Victoria Barbour. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961 and attended his class reunions regularly including his 50th reunion. He attended D. Edwin Johnson Institute, Dallas Baptist University, and Southern Bible Institute where he received ministerial certifications and a diploma.
When Pastor David was not in the pulpit, he was a mild-mannered, insurance agent for various companies like Golden State, Mutual of Omaha, and American General. He also worked 20 years with his son, Dr. Corey C. Toney at No Limit Bail Bonds.
He married Virginia Mae Armstrong in 1968 and to this union was born six children Cedric Elijah Armstrong (deceased), Pastor Frederick F. Toney (deceased), Pastor Dr. Corey C. Toney (Clarette) of Oak Leaf, TX, Pastor Engleburg D. Toney (Delvery) of Wylie, TX, Angela D. Toney-Fudge (Jeffrey) of Lancaster, TX, and Dinah D. Toney of Lancaster, TX.
With memories of his life he leaves to cherish: one brother, Dr. A. C. Toney, Pastor Emeritus, Pleasant Zion Missionary Baptist Church, his four children, Corey, Engleburg, Angela, and Dinah, eleven grandchildren, Chris Bell, Jeffrey Fudge, Kennedy Fudge, Kiara Toney, Cortasia Toney, Frederick Lemans Toney, Benjamin Fitzgerald Toney, Corey Christopher Toney II, Elijah David Toney, Dillon Webber, and Dorian Webber, three great-grandchildren, Isaiah Lemans Toney, Olivia Rebecca Toney, and Seven, a whole host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends and his church family, the members of the Rose of Sharon Missionary Baptist Church whom he loved dearly.
