Philip B. Kelton, Sr. was born August 10, 1959 in Boston, Massachusetts to Andrew E. and Hattie F. (Branch) Kelton. He was the ninth of ten children: James Branch, Charles Branch, Andrew “Earl” Kelton, James Kelton, Thomas Kelton, Corinne Kelton, Andrea Kelton, Annie Kelton, and Norman Kelton. From childhood, he was known for his quiet demeanor, inquisitive mind, and calming presence.

 

He attended Boston Technical High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Education from Fitchburg State University as well as a Master of Education from Texas A&M Commerce. He had a passion for mentoring and guiding young people, which led him to a 30-year career as a teacher for the Dallas Independent School District, where he retired. His commitment to supporting the youth continued into his retirement as he returned to serve Dallas College as an AVID Instructor at the Richland campus and a Success Coach at the Mountain View campus, until becoming ill.

 

In 1984, he met Shari L. (Tipps) through their shared love of jigsaw puzzles. They later married in February 1986. Together, they shared 40 years of marriage and raised five loving children. He was a devoted husband and father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family and ensure they were cared for in every way.

 

Philip most enjoyed spending time with family and participating in church activities. He was an active member of GracePlace Church of Christ in Duncanville, TX for 30 years and a Scoutmaster with Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America) for 17 years. He loved to travel and reflected most fondly of his experiences traveling to Mexico, Nicaragua, and Israel.

 

Philip passed peacefully on May 22, 2026 in Dallas, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Hattie, and siblings, James and Charles Branch and Corinne and Norman Kelton. His love and memory carry on through his beloved wife, Shari; his children Philip, Jr., Philisha, Brian, Brieann, and Sharidyn; and his deeply adored grandchildren, Matthias and Micah. He will also be remembered with great affection by his extended family, friends, community, and the many students whose lives he touched.

 

Philip is remembered for his smile, kindness, and selfless spirit. A lifelong servant to others, he embodied the motto, “Whatever it takes to make someone else’s day easier.”
