Wilma Joyce Meredith Powell was born and raised in Malakoff, Texas by Vida (Mims) and Hubert Meredith. She completed her formal education and was Valedictorian of her class. She graduated high school at the age of 16. She then attended Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, Texas where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Education. She worked as a maid before obtaining a position with DISD in 1963 as a Home Economics teacher at Oliver Wendell Holmes Junior High School. She later worked at Sarah Zumwalt Junior High School as a Home Economics teacher for more than 20 years. She ended her career with DISD at the Thomas Edison High School. Wilma obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from Texas Women’s University while working at Zumwalt.
Wilma was married to Adolphus Powell, Jr. of Waskom, Texas and together they were the proud parents of four beautiful children; Veronna, Kevin, Debra and Meredith (Mickey). These four gave them six awesome grandchildren, an arm-full of outstanding great-grandchildren and 5 precious great-great grandchildren, which made a 5 generational family before her death. She was affectionately known as “Nanny” to them all. And everybody knows that Nanny was a HUGE Texas Rangers fan!
Wilma was a devout Christian woman who loved the Lord with all of her heart. She taught her children the word of God and they became believers as she was. One became a preacher, one a musician, one a singer and one a lover of the word.
Wilma’s last church affiliation was under the pastorage of her son, Kevin, at The Called Fellowship Baptist Church. She served faithfully as an Usher, in the Sunday School, The Women’s Ministry, Vacation Bible School and wherever else she was needed.
Although she has left her temporary earthly home, we look forward to seeing her again in that mansion prepared just for her in heaven. She leaves precious memories with her children Veronna Bell (Buford), Kevin Powell (Betty), Debra Powell and Meredith Powell; her grandchildren Keith (Sheila), Darian, Galen, Keelen, Arman and Vida, her beloved great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, an abundance of nieces, nephews and cousins; The Called Fellowship Church Family and many other friends of the family.
